The revolution of scooter industry in India began with the introduction of Honda Activa in 2000. From there onwards, the popularity of automatic scooter had risen to greater heights. Following the paths of Activa, many brands like Hero, TVS, Bajaj and other international brands like Suzuki, Yamaha and even Aprilia too introduced a performance scooter in India recently. TVS is one such motorcycle brand, who tasted this success with their scooter models.
Wego is the second scooter introduced by the brand after the success run of one of the all time popular scooter, the Scooty Pep. Launched back in 2009, Wego soon became to be one of the best selling two-wheeler for TVS brand. The refurbished Wego was launched in 2014, with some new paint jobs and cosmetic upgrades.
The Engine and Performance
The Wego engine is based on the 109.7cc, 4-stroke, single cylinder, air-cooled engine capable of delivering a maximum power of 5.88 kW @ 7500 rpm and 8.4 Nm @ 5500 rpm. It uses automatic CVT type transmission system for smooth and effective running. This same powertrain is used in the Jupiter. On comparing with the old engine, new one seems to be more powerful and fuel efficient. Wego can hit a top speed of 90 kmph on a long stretch without any trouble. The fuel efficiency of the scooter varies from 45 kmpl to 55 kmpl from city to the highway roads. Moreover, it weighs 3kg less than the Jupiter and it helps in achieving this mileage quiet easily. According to TVS, the change in combustion chamber has made the new Wego to perform well on the roads.
Styling and Features
The new Wego hasn't evolved much from the first edition. The front face looks angular and sharp. First thing you notice is the change d front telescopic forks. It has been changed from silver to black along with a change in the colour of the wheels. As we mentioned earlier, major changes lies with the use of new multi-colour paint job with graphics. On moving to the back, we can notice some of the notable cosmetic changes. Change in the design of tail light and use of new exhaust kit, both has been influenced by the Jupiter.
TVS has improved a lot of features in the new Wego. The fresh looking instrument console is one of the main addition. This fully digital unit has been inspired from the TVS Phoenix motorcycle, which have a blue coloured font. It displays odometer, trip meter, fuel warning and battery indicator warning light as well. One of the coolest stuff is its speedometer, which looks like a tachometer and feels very futuristic on the go. Wego is the first TVS scooter to get Power and Economy modes. Like cars, one switch these modes according to the road or riding conditions. The switches on the handle bar casing looks and feels good. TVS has imposed red switch for starting and yellow switch for honking. The dual tone anti-hysteresis seat keeps you comfort even for a long journey. Other attractive features like external fuel-refill cap, self illuminating key lock, under seat USB charging socket, parking brake, Sync Brake System and AHO are found in this scooter.
Chassis, Suspension and Braking
The TVS Wego is built with high rigidity underbone type frame, which serves as the primary chassis. TVS has worked really hard to make this Wego as a stable scooter with the use of TVS Body Balance Technology. In order to make the handling more easier, the engineers had shifted the center of gravity more towards the front side. Even with the pillion, Wego offers a seamless riding comfort.
Upfront it uses hydraulic telescopic type and for the rear part it uses gas filled dampers. The rear suspension also gets Teflon coated bushes and triple rated springs to enhance the comfort. Suspension is well suited for the uneven Indian roads. It glides us smooth over humps and potholes without losing the comfort. The 12-inch alloy wheels with drum brakes at both the ends offers a smooth and well efficient stopping force. Moreover, it gets Sync Braking System, which makes braking even more secure. TVS offers front disc brakes for this model as an optional feature.
The Verdict
Wego has evolved to be one of the luxury scooter with some attractive features from the past version. The fuel efficiency of Wego is 62 kmpl and which makes it as one of the best in class scooter with pure combination of power and mileage. There are so many convenient features like external fuel filling cap, glow ring around the key slot, storage space and the full metal body. It drives better than some of the alternatives in the market. But the engine lacks the refinement and trust like the mighty Honda.
