Yamaha Motor India has introduced its second scooter in the country, the Ray Z. The Ray Z is just a sporty version of the existing Ray scooter and has been priced Rs. 48,555 (ex-showroom Delhi). The all new Ray Z comes with 5 major changes: a smoked-finish visor for a motorcycle-like image, aluminum rear wing-shaped tandem rider grabbars, a new instrument panel with a carbon fiber patterned background, a carbon fiber patterned seat cover material, and dynamic coloring and graphics.
Nevertheless, there is no change with the technical specifications. The Ray Z is using the same 113cc air-cooled 4-stroke engine with CVT (Continuous variable transmission) that is capable to ensure better fuel efficiency without compromising power and initial pick-up. The scooter produces maximum power of 7.1PS @ 7500 rpm and maximum torque of 8.1 Nm @ 5000 rpm. It works with V-belt automatic transmission.
When the Yamaha Ray was launched in September 2012, the company officials had told that the scooter was intended to target young women aged 16-22 years and Yamaha has sold 70,000 units till the end of April 2013. Now, the firm dedicates the all new Ray Z for the freaky young males aged between 16 and 22 and thus the new slogan for the Yamaha Ray Z, "Your new bro" becomes meaningful.
Meantime, Yamaha also introduced the all new machines, SZ-RR and SZ-S under the SZ brand. These are indeed a better spoty variants targeting both youth and commuters. The bikes are priced Rs. 62,500 and Rs. 59,500 respectively (all are ex-showroom Delhi prices).
"With this new brand slogan and brand statement as a guide, the entire Yamaha Motor Group will work together to make advancements in craftsmanship and marketing that are uniquely Yamaha, and provide Kando (simultaneous feelings of deep satisfaction and intense excitement) that exceeds the expectations of our customers across the globe," said Mr. Hiroyuki Yanagi, President and CEO, Yamaha Motor Co., Japan.
"The company has set up a manufacturing plant in Chennai with an investment of Rs 1,500 crore and it will begin production in the second half of 2013. Meanwhile, we plan to sell 1 million units by 2014 and then to raise this to 2 million by 2016," said Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & MD, India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd.
"The Ray has bagged seven awards since launch in September 2012 and has helped Yamaha gain a growth of 22% in the scooter segment despite the industry registering negative growth in the segment. The company expects to sell 5,000 units monthly of the Ray Z, in addition to 10,000 unit of the Ray," said Mr. Roy Kurian, vice president, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt Ltd.
