Much of us would be familiar with large motorcycles that are used by the police forces of many countries in the world and even in several Hollywood movies like Terminator 2 or the futuristic bike in Robocop. Following suit is the Gujarat Police, donning customized Harley Davidson Street 750.
Clearly inspired from the patrol and escort motorcycles of foreign nations, the Gujarat Police decided to add to their stables six of these beasts for specialized use. Nine Bridges, the Harley Davidson dealer in Ahmedabad took the entire responsibility of customizing the bikes specially for the police force. The bikes get a special paint job, a large windscreen, a chrome crash guard equipped with sirens and beacon lamps, a pillion backrest and panniers on either side.
The bikes will mainly be used for patrolling and escort and will also find use as emergency response units during natural calamities. Although this is for the fist time that a Police force is inducting premium bikes, the question of regular maintenance and how the bikes will be ridden remains. Instances of bringing in high quality and multi-purpose vehicles for police use and being left to rust are plenty. However, let us expect to see a different story with the Gujarat Police.
The Harley Davidson Street 750 is a 749cc liquid cooled, V-Twin engine bike with 47bhp of power and 60 Nm of Torque @ 4000 RPM. The Street 750 is Harley's cheapest offer for the Indian rider with a price of Rs 5 lacs approximately (on-road Mumbai).
