Pricing strategy: Japan vs India
Triumph's new models have stirred interest with their pricing. The Speed 400 starts at 699,000 yen (approximately Rs 3.87 lakh) in Japan, while in India, it comes with a starting price of Rs 2.33 lakh. Similarly, Scrambler 400X is priced at 789,000 yen (about Rs 4.38 lakh) in Japan compared to Rs 2.63 lakh in India.
Consistent features across markets
Contrary to the usual practice of tweaking motorcycles for different markets, Triumph has kept the features of these models largely the same for both India and Japan. Both motorcycles come equipped with a 398cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, single-cylinder engine, capable of generating 40 PS of max power and 38 Nm of peak torque. The color options are also identical in both markets.
Specifications and dimensions
The Scrambler 400X and Speed 400 differ marginally in terms of dimensions. With a length of 2,115 mm and a wheelbase of 1,420 mm, the Scrambler 400X is slightly larger than the Speed 400, which has a length of 2,055 mm and a wheelbase of 1,375 mm. In terms of weight, the Scrambler 400X comes in at 180 kg, as opposed to the 171 kg Speed 400.
Global expansion plans
After Japan, Triumph has set its sights on other international markets including the United Kingdom, North America, South America, and Southeast Asia. The company aims to export 20,000 to 30,000 units annually. To meet this demand, Triumph is also increasing its production capacity to 10,000 units per month by the end of this fiscal year. Furthermore, Triumph is in the process of expanding its dealer network in India to cover 100 cities.
Conclusion
The entry of Triumph's 400cc motorcycles into the Japanese market marks the beginning of an aggressive international expansion strategy. With competitive pricing and consistent features, these models have a promising future not just in Japan but across multiple markets globally.
